During the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
During the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 10; Kona, 7; and South Kohala, 2.
So far this year, there have been 803 DUI arrests compared to 884 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.2 percent.
There have been 1,146 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,195 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.1 percent.
So far this year, there were 16 official traffic fatalities compared to nine during the same period last year, an increase of 77.8 percent.
To date, nine of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — five to drugs and four to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
